The anticipation of a trip has always thrilled me. The excitement of travel was evident even during a field trip to the Evansville Zoo in my elementary school days. My excitement was so intense that I couldn’t sleep, leaving me exhausted but still eager to enjoy the outing. Over time, I’ve learned to manage my enthusiasm, now channeling it into arriving at the airport three hours early. This trip was no exception.

One of the perks of arriving early at the airport is indulging in Harry and Izzy’s famous shrimp cocktail—a true culinary delight. However, the real charm lies in the conversations at the bar. On this occasion, I found myself seated next to two young men in their late 20s, heading to Keystone for a bachelor party. Their hometown? Oakland City, Indiana—a small town northeast of Evansville off Highway 57.

The stories didn’t end there. A humorous mix-up added flavor to the evening: one of them ordered a well-done hamburger, while a gentleman on my right requested his medium-rare. The waitress swapped their orders, inadvertently converting the well-done enthusiast into a fan of medium-rare burgers. Meanwhile, the gentleman on my right received a fresh burger cooked to his preference. It’s moments like these that make sitting at the bar an experience filled with unexpected connections and laughter.

After some pleasant conversations, it was time to board the flight to DC. The journey began smoothly, with an easy flight and a seamless transfer at Dulles Airport. I even had time to relax with a drink at the United Lounge. However, the trip soon turned into an adventure.

Boarding the flight from DC to Paris brought the usual buzz of international travel. Settling in for the eight-hour flight, I organized my electronics, kicked off my shoes, and started my first movie. At 10:30 pm, we pushed back from the gate right on schedule. But shortly after, an announcement informed us of a minor issue that would take five to ten minutes to resolve. Hours passed as I began a second movie, still hopeful for departure.

Eventually, we were asked to disembark with assurances of a possible takeoff later that night or early morning. By 3:30 am, the flight was officially canceled. Despite the inconvenience, United Airlines handled the situation admirably, accommodating tired passengers and maintaining order.

Rebooked by 4:30 am, I headed to a hotel for a brief rest before catching a taxi to Reagan International Airport instead of Dulles. Now, as I sit in another United Lounge with eggs and coffee, typing away on my iPad, I await my next flight at 10:50 am and journey continues.
