From the moment we stepped off the train in Edinburgh, a new passion blossomed in my heart – an undying love for Scotland. Though my darling wife Katy’s blue eyes still enchanted me on our honeymoon in March 1992, I found myself utterly smitten with the rolling green hills, ancient castles, and warm hospitality of this remarkable country.
No Imagination
Growing up in a small town in Southern Indiana, I never imagined traveling far beyond our borders. Yet our honeymoon in the United Kingdom opened my eyes to the breathtaking beauty awaiting in lands unknown. While England charmed us, it was Scotland that truly stole my heart.
Scotland
In the decades since, Katy and I have returned to Scotland time and again, our love for its rugged landscapes and rich culture growing fonder with each visit. Aside from our beloved Wrightsville Beach, no other destination has quite matched the magic we’ve found in this remarkable nation. Our little secret indulgence, a love affair to rival even my adoration for my lovely wife.
Invariably, upon my return from the bonnie lands of Scotland, the first inquiry is always, “Did you golf?” To which I’ve steadfastly responded for decades, “No, why would I spend five hours away from the awesome people?”
Until one has experienced the warm embrace of Scottish hospitality, it is indeed difficult to comprehend the depth of this concept.
The people of Scotland are fun-loving souls who never meet strangersโonly friends they havenโt made yet.
Captivates
This small country holds such a wealth of treasures that an author has even penned a tome extolling how the Scots have invented nearly everything in the modern world. From the sublime landscapes that inspired poets and painters alike, to the rich tapestry of history woven into every stone castle, Scotland captivates the heart and soul.
Yet, it is the affable nature of its people that truly casts an unbreakable spell. In their company, one finds laughter, kinship, and an infectious zest for life that renders pursuits like golf pale in comparison to the simple pleasure of their company.
Golf?
So, back to the oft-posed query, to golf or not to golf in Scotland? The correct answer, my friends, is that it simply does not matter. Follow your heart’s desire, for therein lies the true beauty of this magical land.
For me, the choice has long been not to golf.
Firstly, my skills on the links are lacking, and Iโd rather spend my time on other pursuits than hacking away. Secondly, we have delighted in leisurely walks along the famed Old Course in St. Andrews, capturing cherished memories on the iconic Swilcan Bridge that graces the 18th hole.
Yet, until this year, we had limited our experiences to the hallowed grounds of the Old Course alone. However, after a delightful ramble through the splendors of Carnoustie, coupled with modest improvements to my game, I find myself swayed. Methinks the coming year shall be the one where I finally take my clubs to the land that has so thoroughly captured my heart.
For in Scotland, whether one putts or merely strolls, the true joy lies not in the activities themselves, but in the simple pleasures of immersing oneself in the warm hospitality, natural grandeur, and rich heritage that define this remarkable nation. To golf or not to golf? In the end, the answer matters not – only that you bask in the fullness of all that Scotland has to offer.
